Illegitimate son of King Pedro II of Portugal and Francisca Clara da Silva. From an early age, José was conditioned to religious life, obtaining a degree in Theology from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Évora, having been elected Archbishop of Braga in 1739 (although he was only consecrated in 1741). In addition to Archbishop of Braga, he was also Archbishop of Évora. In Braga, he was responsible for the construction of the "Sete Fontes" (meaning seven fountains), a water supply system.
