Caroline (Nina) Chandler Murray died gracefully on December 2 at the Carlton-Willard Village in Bedford, MA surrounded by her family. A noted educator, author, sailor, and friend, Nina will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity, quick wit, gracious charm and passion for dark chocolate. Nina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 28, 1920, the second of Alfred and Carol Ramsay Chandler's five children. She grew up in Wilmington, DE and summered happily with her extended family on Nantucket Island. Nina graduated from the Baldwin School in 1938 and Smith College (Magna Cum Laude) in 1942. In 1962, she earned a Master of Education degree from the University of New Hampshire, and in 1967, she earned a Doctor of Education degree from Boston University. She co-directed the BU Psycho-Educational Clinic from 1966 to 1970. From 1983-1990, Nina lectured at the Harvard Medical School on child psychology with a special emphasis on how children respond to trauma. The author of numerous professional papers, Nina also wrote The Cruise of the Blue Dolphin, an autobiographical book about her family's sailing voyage halfway around the world when she was thirteen. In 1990, Nina retired to Nantucket where she became an active supporter of many organizations including the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Nantucket Atheneum, and the Nantucket public school system.

Along with her professional career, Nina led a remarkable personal life. She had four children by her first husband, Leverett B. Davis, and a fifth child by her second husband, Elliot G. Fish. In 1967, she married Dr. Henry A. Murray, a Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic at Harvard University for thirty years. Nina was pre-deceased by her brothers Alfred D. Chandler Jr. and William R. Chandler, sister Quita Parrish, and stepdaughter Dr. Josephine Murray. Nina had the respect and love of eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, dozens of nieces and nephews, and many devoted colleagues and friends.
