He was the director of the Botanic Garden in the District of Columbia for 21 years. He was the son of George A. Hess and Elizabeth J. Robertson Hess. On February 19, 1884, he married Marie E. Ely in the District of Columbia. After their divorce in 1899, he married Margaret Davidson the same year. After her death he married Helen Dorothy Callahan on October 19, 1925 in the District of Columbia.

George Wesley Hess, Director of the Botanic Garden in Washington for 21 years before retirement in 1934, died Friday at his home, 4815 Rugby Avenue, Bethesda, after a long illness.

Mr. Hess, 82, was born in Georgetown, where his family had settled before establishment of the District of Columbia. He was educated in the local public schools and began his horticultural career at the age of 13 with the John Saul Floral & Nursery Co.

After serving with the Department of Agriculture and the Public Gardens in Boston, he was appointed Director of the Botanic Garden here. During his years of service at the Botanic Garden he more than trebled the garden's capacity.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30PM tomorrow at the William Reuben Pumphrey Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, with burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Hess is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen D. Hess; five sons, George W. Hess Jr., John D., George Edward, Joseph W. and Gordon A.; a daughter, Mrs. William Loanhardt all of Washington. Also surviving are two stepsons, Malcolm Nicholson of Washington and Leslie Nicholson of Pittsburgh.
