Henry, Joseph Garvin
16 Mar 1841 - 15 Mar 1894

This is the only the second deed out of hundreds recorded by Greenwood Cemetery).

Joseph was born as the second child into what became a large family of 12 children, the son of Wilson Henry, a farmer, and his wife Eliza.

He was born in Kiskimenetas Township, Armstrong County, but the family moved to a farm in Indiana Township, Allegheny County before he was 9 years old.

In 1860 he was a student at age 19, while the other
children worked on the farm.

The Civil War changed any high aspirations, and he enlisted in Company C of the 12th PA Infantry on 25 April 1861. The enlistment was for 100 days and he was discharged in August of the same year. He also was listed as a member of the Independant Battery G (Young's Company) of the artillery, entering in January of 1864 and being mustered out in June of 1865 at Fort Delaware. Any service in between these two units has not yet been identified.

After the war, he returned to Indiana Twp, married and raised a family. He later moved to Sharpsburg, then Hoboken.

He died in March 1894 of dropsy in Sharpsburg at the age of 53.
