BLACK EARTH - Marie Augustina Severson, age 91, of Black Earth, passed away on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, at Ingleside Manor. She was born on March 1, 1930, in the Town of Brigham, Wis. (Barneveld). She was the daughter of August and Marie (Maurer) Gerke.

Marie attended a schoolhouse near the family farm and Mount Horeb High School. She married Burnett Vilas Severson on Oct. 14, 1947, in the old German Valley Lutheran Church. They were the last couple to get married in the church. Marie helped clean the church from top to bottom and her father and family helped to move the organ from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb.

Marie worked for Wisconsin Bell and The A.R. Schmitt Company in Madison until the birth of her son. After retiring, she then cleaned houses for many families. She also was the historian for the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 313 of Black Earth for many years.

Marie was very proud of keeping her house clean. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and plants. Marie enjoyed hosting Monday night dinners in her home with her close family and friends, giving her a reason to cook. She also enjoyed going out to eat and socializing. Marie liked taking car trips. She especially loved to watch over the younger generations of her family and take care of them. In her later years, she enjoyed the births of the new generations and watching them grow.

Marie is survived by her son, Russell and Candy (Cain) Severson of Lena, Ill.; and granddaughter, Katie (John Kohlman) Severson of Black Earth. She was preceded in death by husband, Burnett; parents, August and Marie Gerke; three brothers and four sisters.

Marie was a long-time member of Vermont Lutheran Church and volunteered with many church suppers and events and knew all the work and time that went into funerals and luncheons. So per her wishes, now that she is resting, she would like everyone else to rest also. There will be no visitation or luncheon, just a celebration of her life on Sunday, June 5, 2022, during regular church services at VERMONT LUTHERAN CHURCH, 9886 Vermont Church Road, Black Earth. Church service begins at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be held at Vermont Lutheran Church Cemetery at a later date.
