Marjorie Louise See Sherman, 69, of Mathias, WV passed away suddenly, but peacefully at the home of her son Trent in Gerrardstown, WV on Wednesday Afternoon April 18, 2018. She was doing what she loved in attending to her grandchildren and family. She sat down to take a nap before her grandson Trenton’s game and went to be with the Lord.

Marjorie was born on December 9, 1948 and was what her mom Evelyn called a “Miracle Baby.” An umbilical cord issue around her right leg caused the leg to be amputated and that stress also caused some other defects, mainly an issue with her fingers, so half of two of those had to be removed.

Marjorie was never slowed by her disabilities. Dr. Powell made her a prosthetic leg as soon as she could begin walking and she was an active and even rambunctious young child. Visitors to Lost River State Park were amazed at the small girl who could hop off the diving board, swim like a fish, and hop all the way around the pool to where ever she needed to go. She made lifelong friends at the Park as a child and a master lifeguard. She taught all her children and others to swim here as well. A fearless personality allowed her to learn to roller skate, ski, and perform other activities some folks with two good legs struggle with.

As a teenager, Marjorie grew into a beautiful young woman and was crowned the Turkey Festival Pageant Queen. Graduating high school at Mathias in 1966 Marjorie began her college Education at Potomac State College. In May of 1968. Marjorie rekindled a friendship with her future husband Neil and never looked back. Marj and Neil had met at Lost River State Park years before Neil’s Army service while she was lifeguarding and he was working at the riding stables. They loved one another immediately and were married on April 20, 1969. Pursuing careers in hair styling and barber work, the couple lived in Wheeling and Martinsburg before returning to start their lives in Mathias. They built the family home on the divide south of Mathias on land purchased from Mrs. McCarthy in 1974 and began their family.

Marj’s beauty salon was a hub in the community for many years. She also did assessor work for the County and continued lifeguarding at the Park while the kids grew. In the mid-nineties, once all four kids were more independent, Marjorie went back to Shepherd college to finish her 4-year degree she had begun 25 years earlier. She commuted to Shepherdstown twice a week and earned her degree in Social Work. A few years later she gained her Masters in Teaching Special Education from WVU. Marjorie always instilled the importance of education in all her children and grandchildren. Marjorie loved everyone but had a passion for special needs children. She participated in Partners in Policymaking and helped make some of the laws we have today for children with disabilities in WV. She retired in 2012.

Marjorie was the caretaker for her mother, Evelyn, up until her passing in 2014. After her mother passed, she transitioned to caring for grandchildren and anyone who needed her. This Tech Savvy Granny used her computer and caring heart through Facebook and email. She was deeply concerned for everyone in her community and those she met in her travels to Charleston, Glenville, Shepherdstown, Clemson, Lynchburg, Martinsburg, and beyond.

She loved all activities her children and grandchildren were involved in and never missed t-ball games, dance recitals, or East Hardy and Martinsburg Football games. She loved her church family at Garrett’s Chapel and never missed Apple Butter making or any other events.

Marjorie loved our Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart. In her last Facebook post, she shared good news about the Lord. She also left a note as a bookmark in the phone book from Matthew 7:12; “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you: for this is the law and the prophets.” The world will not be the same without this wonderful soul but the heavens have gained another angel.

Marjorie leaves a legacy with her family. Her husband, Neil, is 70; her Sister Barbara, husband John and three nieces and families; her Son Christopher, wife Amy and grandson Colt; her Son Trent, wife Melissa and grandson Trenton; son Britt and wife Melinda; daughter Serena Brafford, husband Roger, granddaughter Lelia and grandson Roger III, step grandchildren, James and Rose, Ken Tomalka, wife Jenna and children Eli and Amelia.
