"A 63-year-old tavern operator died yesterday afternoon in a fire that destroyed the Lantern Inn, four miles northwest of Parkville on M-45.

The victim was Lemuel Ball, who lived at the tavern. His body was taken from the rubble nearly three hours after the blaze. The fire broke out about 3:15 o'clock. Roland Giffee, Platte County coroner, said Ball's death was accidental. The family is opposed to an autopsy. He said the cause of death was suffocation and burning.

Flames quickly engulfed the building and prevented firemen from entering. A sister of Ball, Miss Muriel Ball, who shared the tavern living quarters, escaped unhurt.

Mr. Ball was born in Gravette, Ark., and had lived in Parkville 45 years. He operated the tavern 11 years. He was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher at the Linden Baptist church, Gladstone.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Loma R. Severino of Prairie Village and Mrs. Joann Rinehart of Fairway; and three grandchildren." The Kansas City Times, January 20, 1965
