"March 16 – Mrs. Caroline Mayer, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this community, died Monday evening from the effects of a stroke of paralysis suffered some time since. Deceased was born in Germany Nov. 5, 1845, and came to America with her parents when 21 years of age, settling in Austintown which had since been her home, occupying the same house for more than half a century. She was a kind; considerate neighbor and friend a woman universally beloved, and her passing is deeply mourned by a wide circle of acquaintances. Her husband, John M. Mayer, died 30 years ago. She was for many years a devoted member of the United Evangelical church at Smith's Corners. The surviving children are Mrs. Thomas Russell, Mrs. Wm. Webster, Miss Anna Mayer, Mrs. Chas. Hollabaugh, Henry G., Frederick, Mrs. H. A. (sic Edward John) Creed and Edson Mayor. She also leaves one sister and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services Thursday afternoon from the home of Mrs. Thomas Russell, Rev. Frederick Mayer of Youngstown pronouncing the eulogy. Interment in the Smith's Corners cemetery."
