Sam Walter Simpson, 90, of Cuero, met his Savior face-to-face on the evening of December 21, 2021. He was born on October 13, 1931, in Pleasanton, to Joseph Walter and Jane Lillian Moore Simpson. He married the love of his life, Audrey Nell West, on February 20, 1955, upon his return from his service as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Navy.

On May 13, 1966, Sam and Nell moved to Cuero with their four children, Kathy, Julie, Suzie, and John for Sam's work in the oil and gas industry. Sam spent his career in the oilfield, eventually retiring from BHP only to head back out to the oil patch as an independent pumper until, at the age of 75, his family insisted on his retirement.

Sam was ordained as a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Cuero on July 16, 1978, where he and Nell were members. He served as both a deacon and the church treasurer until he was no longer able to do so. He and Nell also served as foster parents for the state of Texas for numerous children in need of protective custody. Strong family values and a Christian worldview were central to who he was.

Sam loved the Dallas Cowboys, NASCAR, old westerns, and coffee, but most of all, he loved his family. Memories made while gathered around the table will be among the most treasured by those he leaves behind. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, commitment to conservative politics, ability to fix just about anything, but most of all, his love and commitment to his beloved Nell. In his later years, he was her devoted caretaker. They were constant companions whose love and devotion to one another was evident to all.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bufford Addington and Joseph Simpson; sisters, Edith Stevenson, Jeralene Addington, Ola Addington and Ruby Addington; and daughters, Audrey Kathleen Stanfill and Suzan Joan Simpson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Audrey Nell Simpson; children, Julie Maxine McMichael (E.J.) of Victoria, and John Walter Simpson (Rose) of Cuero. He is also survived by his son-in-law Neal Alan Stanfill of Cuero as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved very much.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home in Cuero followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. with Johnny Cravey officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero.

Pallbearers include Justin Stanfill, Vincent Stanfill, Adam Simpson, Kaiden Shafer, Tyler Wilson, and Matthew Jackson. Honorary pallbearers include John Paul Jackson, Brandon Shafer, Trey Meyer, and Scott Brysch.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be given to the American Cancer Society.
