Born Aug. 24, 1930, in Pierre, to Roy and Martina (nee Binckley) Doherty, Connie worked as a Registered Nurse and was a devoted mother. She graduated with a B.S. in nursing from McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls and worked as an RN at Children's Memorial Hospital in Washington and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Mrs. Gilbert was president of the Newcomers Club of Barrington, she served on the boards of Hubbard Street Dance Company, Mid-America Ballet and Women's Board of the Ravinia Festival. She was the city chairperson of the Girl Scouts in Tripoli, Libya. She served as board member of The Service Club of Chicago and was an active participant on the philanthropic committee. Through The Service Club, she and her husband mentored two young African American girls at the Marillac House from seventh grade through high school. She was a supporter of the Archdiocese of Chicago as a member of the Archbishop's Circle of the Lumen Cordium Society and benefactor to Catholic Charities. She was a founding member of the Illinois Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. As a Patron she chaired events at The Art Institute, Ravinia, and The Cardinal's residence. She visited the Vatican on two occasions and personally met with Pope John Paul II. Her enthusiasm and leadership were instrumental in the growth of these organizations.
She was an avid traveler to over 60 countries with her husband, Ralph.
She was a supporter, promoter and benefactor of Chicago's arts community.
Survivors include her loving husband, Ralph, with whom she was united in marriage June 9, 1951, in Rapid City; three dear children, Rebecca Gilbert of Chicago, Theresa Gilbert of Barrington, Ill. and Grant (Susanne) Gilbert of Morton Grove, Ill.; four cherished grandchildren, Nathan Papa, Adam Ganzer, Elle and Quinn Gilbert.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, brother Donald Doherty, and grandson Noel Papa.
