FORMER CALISTOGA RESIDENT DIES
Mrs. Rebecca Doss Died on Tuesday at Napa Home
Mrs. Rebecca Cole Doss, widow of the late George W. Doss of Calistoga, passed away Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Shurtleff Hospital in Napa after an illness of only a couple of days.
It was only about a week before the deceased was taken ill that a home gathering of the family met at Mrs. Doss' home in Napa and about thirty of the Immediate relatives were photographed in a family group, eight of the eleven living children being present, little expecting that the one who for half a century had held a home circle together was so soon to be taken away. Last Sunday morning Mrs. Doss was at the Baptist church, of which organization she had been a member for many years.
Mrs. Doss, whose maiden name was Rebecca Cole, was a native of Clay county, Missouri, and was aged 71 years, 7 months and 29 days. She spent her girlhood in Texas, crossing the plains to California with her parents in 1863, and was married to Mr. Doss at Susanville, Lassen county, September 17, 1864.
For several years the couple lived in California, then removed to Oregon, where they remained till 1.884, when they returned to Napa valley, where for the past thirty-three years deceased has lived an unselfish life of Christian service till death called her to her reward. Five years ago last month Mr. Doss passed away and left a lonely wife and family.
The deceased was the devoted mother of just a dozen children, six sons and six daughters, and had many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren who will miss her loving care. Her children are Seth B. and Jesse Doss, Mrs. Anna Colyar, Mrs. Alice Drown, Arthur, Henry, William and Asa Doss, Mrs. Bessie Clement, Mrs. Lottie Ransford and Mrs. Minnie Records, all living. The youngest, Maybell, died in Calistoga in infancy in 1889. F. M. Cole of Calistoga is a nephew.
The funeral was held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at Pinkham's undertaking parlors in Napa and the remains were brought to Calistoga and Interment took place about 1:30 o'clock beside her late husband.
