James I. Owen, aged 88, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Lincolnville at 10 o'clock last night. He had been ill of infirmities of old age and was bedfast for the past four days.
Mr. Owen had spent practically all his life in the Lincolnville neighborhood. Before a precinct was established at Lincolnville he used to go to Lagro to vote and it was there he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln. He voted in the last election for Calvin Coolidge. Mr. Owen was always a staunch Republican and a honorable and patriotic citizen, serving in the Union Army.
Mr. Owen was one of the oldest subscribers of the Plain Dealer. He started taking the paper when it was first started back before the Civil War.
Mr. Owen was the son of William and Mary Owen and was born in Henry County in 1836.
At nine years of age he came with his parents to the Lincolnville neighborhood which was his home for 79 years, or until his death. During this time he lived on a farm until 24 years ago when he moved to Lincolnville.
Mr. Owen was a veteran of the Civil War, serving about two years and attaining the rank of sergeant. On Sept. 8, 1864 he was united in marriage to Matilda B. Reynolds, who with four children survive. He was a member of the M. E. Church for fifty years. The only deaths in his family previous to his death were of two grandchildren, Lena Owen Houch and James Wayne Owen.
Children surviving are C. P. Owen, Marion; A. F. Owen, Paoli, Ind.; J. Lynn Owen, Lincolnville and Mrs. William Engleman, Lincolnville. Seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at the M. E. Church in Lincolnville at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning.
