Margaret Dewan was born in Ireland September 9th, 1844, and would have been 65 years old yesterday. She grew to young womanhood in her native country and was there married to Michael J. Shelley. In 1865 they, with the eldest daughter, Kate, two months old, came to America and direct to Boone County. They resided for a time at Moingona and later removed across the river to the small farm on this side, which remained her home until her death. To Mr. and Mrs. Shelley were born ten children, five of whom died while quite young. In the summer of 1878 the husband and father died and about two months later the oldest son, James, was drowned in the Des Moines river. The surviving children are three daughters, Kate, the well-known heroine, now agent for the Northwestern at Moingona; Mayme, for several years a popular school teacher of the county; and Mrs. Margaret Swisher, residing near Perry; and one son, John, in the employ of the Northwestern in this city.
The funeral party came to Boone Wednesday morning in a special train, which was kindly furnished by the Northwestern Company for the occasion and the services were held from the Sacred Heart church. Father Saunders conducted requiem high mass and spoke feelingly of the life and character of the deceased. The pall bearers were Maurice Sullivan, Maurice Fitzgerald, M.J. Reilley, George Rea, E.C. Jordan and Matt Welsh. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
