Grayson Layman, the son of Stephen Layman and Susan Kimble, was born November 27, 1857 in Grayson County, Kentucky. Grayson and his brother Newton were farming in Millwood at the time of the 1880 census. He married Caroline O'Bannon, the daughter of John Russell Rousseau O'Bannon and Zilpha Jane Paul. "Carrie" was born on November 23, 1860 in Kentucky. She was living with her parents in Sand Spring, Grayson County, Kentucky at the time of the 1880 census. She was the wife of Grayson Layman of Millwood, Kentucky. Grayson and Carrie were the parents of the following known children: Edward, Dora, Claude Earl and Roger Layman.

Grayson Layman died in Grayson County on July 20, 1933 at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 27 days. His widow Carrie O'Bannon Layman died three and a half months later on November 5, 1933 at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 13 days. They were both buried in Layman Memorial Gardens located in Millwood. Their sons, Claude Earl and Roger, are also buried there.
