Miss Gladys Hazel Scarlette, 92, of Summerfield, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021.

Miss Scarlette's funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, August 11, at First Baptist Church of Summerfield with Dr. Kelly Bullard and Rev. Derrick Moody officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends beginning at 11 a.m. at the church.

A native of Guilford County, Gladys was born on November 20, 1929, the daughter of the late William Arley Scarlette and Ora Thorpe Scarlette. A lifetime resident of Summerfield, she graduated from Summerfield High School and was a long-time, active member of First Baptist Church. She retired after working for more than 30 years for Housing and Urban Development in Greensboro.

She was the family genealogist and local historian. She enjoyed doing research of her family's past and the beginnings of Summerfield. She was instrumental in establishing the library and History Committee at First Baptist and sang in the choir for several years. She has written 3 books, was a talented poet, and has had several historical-themed articles in the Greensboro News & Record across the years. Because of her dedication to the Town of Summerfield, she was honored with being Grand Marshall of a Summerfield Founder's Day Parade, where she held book signings.

Gladys was also a member of the Summerfield Grange. She thoroughly enjoyed reading and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her 7 siblings: Ila S. Ingold, Hilda S. Pegram, Lucille A. Pope, Elizabeth S. Nelson, Jasper Angel, Marvin Angel, and Ivan Angel.

Left to cherish her memory are several loving nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and her church family.
