She attended school in rural Platte County and graduated from Kramer High School in 1940. On February 20, 1946 she married Duane Ernst at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. They farmed southwest of the Columbus area. Alyce was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and was active in the Women's Guild and also the second milers. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as Poppy seed chairman for several years, and she was also a member of the 40 & 8 club. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed cooking, sports, traveling, and loved spending time with her friends, family, and grandchildren.
