Edythe Irene Becher Bembry, 83, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, February 20, 2012, at the Golden LivingCenter in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 25, at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Pastor Chris McArdle officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Saturday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's United Church of Christ or to a charity of choice.

Edythe Becher Bembry was born March 4, 1928, in Columbus, NE to Herman and Olga (Depe) Becher. She was a 1946 graduate of Kramer High School. After high school graduation, she was an office assistant and bookkeeper in Omaha, NE, before moving to Long Beach, CA, where she met her husband, William Bembry. Bill and Edythe were united in marriage on May 12, 1949, in Portland, OR. After living in California for a few years, they moved back Columbus in 1955 where they became life-long residents. After returning to Columbus, Edythe worked for Loup Engineering and Rexall Drug Store for many years.

Edythe was active in several community services. She was both a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years, and participated as a Cub Scout den mother for one year. She was active in the PTA for Second Ward Elementary School, receiving a yearly membership pin for each year of service. Edythe was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for some years before becoming a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus. In the late 1970's Edythe and her husband joined St. Luke's United Church of Christ. In later years, she enjoyed being a member of the "Class of 46" lunch club that met monthly in area restaurants.

Edythe was an avid life-long reader, enjoyed sewing, knitting, and needlework. She also enjoyed traveling. After retirement, Edythe and Bill regularly travelled to several areas of the United States and Mexico.
