Jeremiah Harrison, born 1707, Smithtown, Suffolk, N.Y., British Colonial America to Isaiah & 2nd wife Abigail SMITH Harrison. Other researchers list her parents as Sarah BREWSTER & Jonathan Smith. Jonathan was the son of Richard "Bull" Smythe/Smith. "The Legend of the Bull;" a 1939 mural by Robert Gaston depicts Richard Smith riding his bull around a giant area (in a deal he made with the Indians) to claim the borders of Smithtown. In Smithtown, is a 14-foot, 5-ton bronze bull statue. Richard Smythe was a witness on the deed that the Indian chief deeded to Lyon/Lion Gardiner for a rescue of the chief's dau.. The deed is no myth, because the framed small square of paper in old English letters, is held by the Long Island Historical Society. That Richard Smith bought this land from Lyon Gardiner & later had a discussion with Lyon's widow abt. the purchase, was witnessed by their son, David Gardiner. LONG ISLAND GENEALOGY; Suffolk County, New York: "The 1st white settler was Lion Gardiner, a soldier engineer, who came to this area from Connecticut in 1639 to start a Plantation on land he had purchased from the (Indians) & the Earl of Stirling. Gardiner settled on the Isle of Wright {Gardiner's Island}...with wife, 2 children & his men."

▪︎ FAMOUS FAMILIES of N.Y., 1917; The Lawrence Family of N.Y. State: pedigree begins with Robert, who went with Richard, the Lion-hearted on a Crusade to the Holy Land. Because of his bravery in 1191, he became Sir Robert Lawrence of Ashton Hall, Lancashshire, England. The Lawrence coat-of-arms was later used by his descendants, who went to North America. Henry Lawrence, who was Lord President of Oliver Cromwell's Council, was one of the patentees of estate on Connecticut River, & among the ones who in 1635, hired Lyon Gardiner. Henry's cousins of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, John (1618) & Wm. (1623) Lawrence sailed in 1635 from England to Plymouth on the ship Planter. Abt. 1640, they went to L. I., N. Y. & were joined by 1655 by younger brother, Thomas (1625). All 3 brothers secured large patents from both the Dutch & British authorities. William Lawrence resided at Lawrence Neck & had 2 sons by his 1st wife; & 7 children by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Smith. William Lawrence, Jr., md. Deborah Smith, dau. of Richard Smith, patentee of Smithtown. The marriage abt. doubled his wealth & produced 12 children.

▪︎At Smithtown, Isaiah Harrison bought land from Lawrences, related to Richard Smythe. Abigail's maiden name unproven; so, above info. added.

▪︎ On 2 Jan. 1687, Isaiah Harrison became the blacksmith for Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York Colony. Other researchers state he sailed from Ireland or England, on the ship, Spotted Calf. In England, the Statue of Appentice Law passed in 1563, made apprenticeship with a lawfully written contract a requirement for anyone practicing a trade. More research needed to find this indenture for Isaiah Harrison. A 7-yr. apprentice term starting at age 14 was common. In 1688; Oyster Bay, L.I., N.Y., British Colonial America; Isaiah Harrison married his 1st wife, Elizabeth WRIGHT, dau/of Gideon & Elizabeth TOWNSEND Wright; her families were Quakers; The town records, with children's names, birthdates, & their parents names prove this relationship. Here, Isaiah bought land from his wife's cousin, John Wright. Was this Isaiah Harrison witness in 1784 in Smithtown? On RootsTech, professional genealogist, Barbara Vines Little said: "LOOK AT THE LAW." She continued that in certain areas, a boy of 14 could be a witness, as long as he knew right from wrong. WOW!

From HISTORY website: In England, every citizen was expected to attend the Church of England. The Separatists in Northern England began to worship their own way in secret. Then, they were persecuted & many lost their homes & livelihood. "Separatists end up on the outside of Society," says Vicki Oman, affiliated with PLYMOUTH PLANTATION. Even in Holland, they held low-paying jobs & their culture was endangered. So, 102 Pilgrims, sailed in 1620 for New England. Meanwhile, the Puritans thought they could reform the Church of England & in 1630, they arrived in 17 ships & numbered more than 1000 persons to establish Massachusetts Bay Colony. Puritans had money & resources & a decade later increased to 20,000, while Plymouth numbered 2600.

▪︎In 1721, after selling land in N.Y., Isaiah Harrison family moved to Sussex, on the Delaware {claimed by both Pennsylvania & Maryland}. "The History of Sussex Co., Delaware" by Dick Carter: In 1728, Ryves Holt, sheriff estimated the sparse population of Sussex at 1750. After clearing land, early settlers planted corn, tobacco, wheat, & flax. Most farmers lived near streams & owned a boat of some sort. Nearby bays & Atlantic Ocean yielded sea salt & frequent ship wrecks provided goods to salvage.

Preston, (32) which said: He was stationed on main path to Clinch, opposite Town House (33) to protect settlers & mentioned the Vance, Fowler, & Harrison Families. Survey Certificate dates JEREMIAH HARRISON'S settlement as 1772. They appear to be the same family as lived in Augusta, VA: JEREMIAH & ISAIAH HARRISON were delinquents on Sep 1742 in Hugh Thompson's Company. (35) In summer 1774, JEREMIAH HARRISON was paid for pasturage 135 steers for use at Maiden Springs Station (1 of 7 palisaded Forts built by LORD Dunmore's order). (36) There are 2 JEREMIAH HARRISONS in Augusta, VA. & they have different wives. (37) (The HARRISON men, do not appear in the muster lists for Dunmore's War. Isaac Crabtree's supporting statement for his brother, Abraham's pension application in 1828, Wayne, KY. states: they were sent to JEREMIAH HARRISON'S FORT in 1776, & Jacob Crabtree said that he was discharged from that Fort in 1776. The family likely descended from Rev. Thomas Harrison, interim chaplain (Anglican) of Jamestown Colony, & kin to the James River Harrisons. (Thomas left Jamestown after 1644 Indian Massacre). He went to New England & md. Dorothy Symonds. But by 1650 Thomas had returned to England (& later became a widower & md. 2nd Katharine Bradshaw. President Abraham Lincoln (Abigail Harrison Herring = Jeremiah's sister) & entertainer, Elvis Presley. John {Jeremiah's \2 brother} & Phoebe Harrison to Hood family to Vernon Presley) descended from the Shenandoah Valley Harrisons."

To attract settlers to Shenandoah Valley, some flexibility was allowed. Some dissenters fought in Revolutionary War in return for guaranteed religious freedom. No records found that this Jeremiah Harrison fought in Rev. War.

At this time a woman was not allowed to be guardian of her underage children or to sign contracts on her own. If a widow remarried, her new husband gained control of her property, but her husband needed her permission to sell her DOWER** This means that CATHERINE was married before marrying JEREMIAH or owned/inherited land before marrying.

▪︎"Frontier Forts of VA." Emery L. Hamilton: JEREMIAH HARRISON FORT; This fort was located on North Fork of Holston. (31)The fort is 1st mentioned, 6 Oct 1774, in a letter of Arthur Campbell to Wm. On 14 Jun 1787, JEREMIAH HARRISON sold his 340 ac. to David Smith. JEREMIAH HARRISON'S FORT was probably a small stockage & how long it was in existence is unk. (HARRISON'S FORT was 5 miles from Vance's Station; present location of either is unk.)

▪︎OLDEN TIMES of GREENE CO, TENNESSEE published in 1983; "Greenville Sun" Greenville, TN.: "One of the early migrant families from VA was the Harrison Clan...One of the Harrison men died on the journey from VA, & his son "Billy" was brought on into the area by his uncle Isaiah. Billy Harrison settled in what is now the Harrison Community south of (Nolichucky) River." Billy built his log cabin before his son James was born there in 1808. This home remained in the family & (was when this was written) the comfortable home of local historians & educators, Professor W. A. & his sister, Miss Addie Bell Harrison. (These Harrisons were ancestors of 2 U.S. Presidents: William Henry Harrison; born VA. & his grandson, Benjamin Harrison.

▪︎J. Houston Harrison discusses in detail the relationship of the Shenandoah Harrison family to the two US Presidents, & he gives detailed proof for the relationship to President, Abraham Lincoln.

▪︎Wikipedia: HARRISON FAMILY of VIRGINIA

"The 2nd branch of the VA Harrisons,(Isaiah, unmarried blacksmith, a highly valued occupation in Colonial times) emigrated (on ship "Spotted Calf") from Britain to (Oyster Bay, L.I., N.Y.) in 1687 & settled in Shenandoah Valley 50 yrs later. Thomas was closely associated with Henry Cromwell & died in 1682 in Dublin, Ireland as an Independent preacher). President Abraham Lincoln (Abigail Harrison Herring = Jeremiah's sister) & entertainer, Elvis Presley. John {Jeremiah's \2 brother} & Phoebe Harrison to Hood family to Vernon Presley) descended from the Shenandoah Valley Harrisons."
