NORTHWEST FORK 100, SUSSEX, DELAWARE

...EARLY SETTLEMENTS

"Circumstances...are similar to Nanticoke 100, with the exception the Penns exercised no control over it....All the land patented down to 1776 was upon Maryland Patents. The Nutters, Layfields, Polks, & Adamses made their 1st settlement in this {area}...the Nutters coming directly from England....The 1st {Adams settler}, Roger Adams was granted a tract called "Backcloss," Jan. 1, 1696. He & his son in 1740 also took upon Maryland Warrants "Addition to Luckhorn" containing 41 acres; "Addition to Backcloss" containing 77 acres; "Batchelor's Quarters" containing 23 acres was warranted in 1731; "Luckhorn" containing 50 acres in 1719; "Clifton's Delight" containing 29 acres for a total of 270 acres....On Dec. 10, 1740, Richard Adams received a grant for 100 acres called "Adams Delight"....A grant...was re-warranted to William Adams Dec. 2, 1753.

From Genealogy Trails, there are 35 early male Adams marriages in Sussex County on the Delaware & the earliest is as follows:

JOHN ADAMS--AGNES BAGWELL--1 Mar 1724

It is believed that Elizabeth ADAMS & Jeremiah Harrison were married about 1736, probably in Sussex County on the Delaware, British Colonial America & that Elizabeth ADAMS Harrison died about 1753, in Augusta County, in the Colony of Virginia.

In the will of Elizabeth's son, Josiah Harrison, (written 1810; Mecklenburg County, North Carolina & probated in 1812), Josiah names 2 of his children after his father & mother & 2 of his children are named after his wife, Mary CRAVENS Harrison's father & mother. Since this Harrison family had a history of naming their 1st children after their wife's father & mother, it is believed that Elizabeth ADAMS Harrison's father was named Samuel Adams & her mother was named Ann (maiden name unk.) Adams. Also, Josiah Harrison's child, Esther Harrison was named after, Josiah's sister, Esther Harrison. The Will of Josiah Harrison follows:

"....JOSIAH HARRISON of Mclingburg (sic)...North Carolina do Constitute this my last will....

(1) to my daughter, ANN (Harrison) $60

(2) to my son(,) SAMUEL (Harrison) $50

(3) my son (,) JOHN CRAVEN (Harrison) south side (1/2) of my land

(4) (to my son) JEREMIAH (Harrison) north side (1/2) my land

(5) to my daughter ELIZABETH ADAMS (Harrison) 1/2 balance of house & kitchen furniture

(6) to my daughter MARGARET HIATT (Harrison) 1/2 balance of house 7 kitchen furniture

(7) my daughter ESTHER (Harrison) ($500 for her support)

balance of my Estate divided among my 6 children

(according to the 1810 US Census, the 7th child, Esther Harrison was underage)

Executors: sons, Samuel (Harrison) & John Craven (Harrison)

Elizabeth ADAMS Harrison died before 1758, in the part of Augusta County that later became Rockingham County, Virginia. If there is no tombstone for Thomas Harrison, the founder of Harrisonburg, or Daniel Harrison, the founder of Dayton, both in Rockingham County, Virginia, why should I expect there to be one for Elizabeth ADAMS Harrison, whose only notable accomplishment seems to be as a mother. So, I have changed her burial details to unknown & also because many of the cemeteries in Rockingham County no longer exist. For example, Ashenfelter Cemetery has been farmed over & a chicken house placed over it. In Bowman Family Cemetery the fence is down & livestock have knocked the stones over. The Cavetown Community Cemetery has been used as a dump. Donovan Cemetery was destroyed by high water. Dayton Presbyterian Church Cemetery: "This record will be found with the Cook's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery Records. Note: Many graves moved when dam was built to create Silver Lake." written by J. Robert Shank in 1967. Dingledine-Swartz Family Cemetery: In 2005 fence is gone & appears horses are walking thru it." Harrison & Effinger Family Cemetery...thru Court Order... reburied in Woodbine Cemetery. The Harrisonburg Methodist Church Cemetery, changed to Church of the Brethren & then to Mennonite Church; so, some were reburied in Woodbine Cemetery & who knows where else. I have read that the remains of Reuben Harrison whose 1st wife was Lydia Harrison were removed to a Cemetery by Endless Caverns, & a marker at one time existed there for him. However, it is my understanding that Reuben's marker, no longer exists. After searching thru these cemeteries name by name & reading abt. how fieldstones were used that are no longer legible & there were so many unmarked graves, I'm completely overwhelmed.

In contrast to the above cemeteries is the Custer Family Cemetery, Fulks Run, Rockingham County, Virginia: "fence erected in 1995 by Custer descendants Who also placed a memorial marker with several names...In 1967, J. Robert Swank indicated the Cemetery is on the old Abe Hess farm. Pat Ritchie's book Notes the land was owned by the Custer family from 1750's - 1870's. (Notes) 1. 1967; J. Robt. Swank 2. 1999; by Patricia Turner Ritchie"

My question is why cannot the Harrison descendents &/or the towns of Harrisonburg & Dayton, both in Rockingham County, Virginia erect such monuments to the founders of towns, which indeed Thomas Harrison & Daniel Harrison were.
