She was the paternal grandchild of Philip Light (1849-1900) and Rachel Levine (1849-1902), Russian Jewish immigrants who settled in New York City. (Her mother lived briefly in Denver, CO before her death with several of her children). She was the maternal grandchild of Gershom Lipman Adler & Ada Blewer, Russian Jews, whose son Abraham "Abe" Adler was, for a time, a dry goods merchant in Tarboro, NC.
Her parents had immigrated separately from Russia and her father left NYC for the South where married Jennie in 1890 when he was 23 yeas old and she 21. The couple eventually settled in Tarboro ca. 1900, where Abraham established himself as a merchant. The couple later resided at 306 St. John Street. Her mother died in 1928, and the following year her father married a 42-year old Russian immigrant (Katie), with whom he remained with until his death in 1942 at about age 76. Abraham Light reportedly died in Baltimore.
In 1917, 22-year old Lena married 23-year old Jewish-Russian immigrant, Phillip Shugar, who had just arrived in Tarboro and opened a department store.
The newlyweds first resided with Lena's parents on St. John Street, but by 1930 had moved to their own home at 310 Baker Street in Tarboro.
Phillip and Lena would be parents to 6 known children:
* Dr. Gershon Joseph Shugar, PhD. (1918-2004)
* Margueritte Shugar Brill (1921-2012)
* Harold Bernard "H.B." Shugar (1923-2009)
* Gilbert Lee Shugar (1925-1993)
* Evelyn Shugar Brauer (1927-2010)
* Gerald Rivers Shugar (1931-2009)
Phillip Shugar died in 1972 at the age of 77. His bride of 55 years survived another 8 years, passing in 1980 at age 85.
As for her siblings, brother George Light (1893-1913) died at Dix Hospital in Raleigh after being hit in the head by a horse. Sophia Light (1898-1991) married attorney Louis Israel Rubin (1895-1964) of Baltimore and later removed to Trenton, NJ where they both died. Brother, Maurice Hyman Light (1906-1969) graduated UNC and reportedly died in Philadelphia.
