Evelyn (Shugar) Brauer was born in Tarboro, N.C. to Phillip, proprietor of Shugar's Department Store, and Lena Julia (Light) Shugar. Her siblings were Gershon, Marguerite, Harold, Gilbert, and Gerald. She was a 1948 graduate of the University of North Carolina and a registered pharmacist. She married Charles Kenneth Brauer, M.D. on 4 June 1950, and they had two children, Richard Jeffrey Brauer, M.D. and Joyce Ann Brauer, esq. Charles predeceased her on 28 January 1999. In 2010, while on holiday, she became ill and was taken to a hospital in Naples where she died on 6 November from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
