Three Killed
In Collision
Of Two Cars

Three persons, two of them Joplin residents, were
killed shortly before noon today in a head-on collision
between two automobiles about 12 miles south of Jop-
lin on highway 43.

The victims were:
Paul W. Stephenson, 48 years old, of Seneca.
Barney Martin Hardy, 64, of 2011 Bird avenue.
Mrs. Hazel Hardy, 63, wife of Mr. Hardy.

Trooper Kenny Walker of the Missouri highway patrol said Mr. Stephenson was driving north on highway 43 when his automobile veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a car driven south by Mr. Hardy. Coronor James L. Haddock of Newton county said the three persons were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. John Roberts of Seneca.

The coronor said skid marks indicated the Stephenson vehicle was completely on the wrong side of the highway and had skidded for 191 feet before the crash.

The Hardy vehicle skidded about 70 feet before the point of impact, indicating that both drivers were attempting to avoid the collision. The Joplin couple apparently were headed for Grand lake, from the quantity of food and other articles found in the car, the coroner said.

Stephenson is employed at the Williams Chevrolet Company of Seneca as a mechanic and is head of the Seneca Volunteer fire department. His body was received by the Biddlecome funeral home of Seneca.

The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Hardy were received by the Hurlbut-Glover mortuary of Joplin.
