MRS. SCHMIDT DEAD
Pioneer Rice County Woman Came From Germany at Age of Eight
Mrs. Wm. Schmidt whose life had been despaired of for several days passed away at the home on South Grand Avenue about 4 o'clock this morning. She was 73 years of age, having been born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, December 11, 1852. She came to the United States at the age of eight, arriving in this country at the beginning of the Civil War. She had lived in Rice county for 47 years, near Bushton until 1902 when the Schmidt family moved to Lyons, buying their present home from the late S. H. Jones.
Mrs. Schmidt was loved by a wide circle of friends although she was distinctly a home woman, her greatest pleasure being found around her own fireside. She had been tried by two periods of stress in this nation, the Civil War and pioneer life in a drought stricken new state, but she came through smiling and they only served to strengthen and enoble her character. She is survived by her husband and four daughters, Mrs. A. W. Volkmann, Mrs. J. W. Miller and Mrs. James Board, all of Lyons and Mrs. Lydia Cramm of El Dorado.
The funeral of Mrs. Schmidt will be held from the Lyons Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. Thackery in charge.
