His obituary in the New Decatur Advertiser is as follows:
"It is with deep regret, and the sense of severe loss, that we learn (of)the death of J. H. Roberts, formerly of Danville, but later of Austinville. He has long been a friend of the New Decatur Advertiser and of its editor. He was a correspondent of this paper both from Danville and Austinville, and was a charter member of the Quill Club, of which he was long Vice-President.
...Mr. Roberts was a fine man physically--tall, straight and well formed. Mentally he was equally well endowed, being one of the brightest and most intelligent of our correspondents. He was open, unreserved, easily approached and quite unaffected; courteous in manner and kind in heart. It will be long before we look upon his like again.
He was 74 years of age. He died at the home of his son in Austinville Wednesday morning, July 21, 1909 and was buried the day following in the historic cemetery of Johnson Chapel by the remains of many of his relatives and friends, just as he would have desired to be."
Another article from the same newspaper reads as follows:
"Joe Hurd (sic) Roberts died at the residence of his son, F. B. Roberts in Austinville. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Emerson from the residence Thursday. Services at grave were conducted by I.O.O.F. Lodge of Austinville, with interment at Johnson Chapel".
