He was born to the late Leonard and Beatrice (Simmons) Hoon on June 29, 1938. Richard was a lifelong Dayton resident and graduated from Dayton High School in 1956. At the age of 8, while climbing a tree, he was electrocuted by 7500 watts when he came in contact with high tension wires. Subsequently, Dayton and Mulberry lost power that ended Richie Rutan's no hitter when the lights went out.
He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1958. He was a career union bricklayer for Don Scharer until his retirement in 2000. In 1965, he married Nel Hodge and they later divorced.
In typical Hooner fashion, he was a proud Democrat in a Republican town. He loved Alabama, Duke and Purdue sports, golfing, drinking Bud Light, and women, not necessarily in that order.
He is survived by one daughter; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Richard is preceded in death by two sons, Shannon Hoon and Tim Forkeotes; and his sister, Barbara Joyner.
A special thank you to the VA and Suburban Home Health for their exceptional care.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Dayton Cemetery with Julie Pope officiating. A celebration of Richard's life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 5-9 PM at Southfork Pub in Mulberry.
