Roland was born to John Theodore and Elizabeth Ann Delperdang. He spent his early life living in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary's School. Roland died Tuesday night in Rhodes after suffering a heart attack while attending a softball game.
He was employed as herdsman for the Pioneer Beef Co., in Rhodes, Iowa. He farmed all his life except for the time he served in the US Army, WWII in Occupied Japan for 18 months. A member of VFW in Remsen, IA, American Legion in Rhodes and St Mary's Catholic Church Colo, IA.
He and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Berfeld, lived in Remsen and in Paullina before moving to Rhodes in 1961.
He and Betty purchased the Ace Cafe from Charles and Alice Elliot in 1970 as a family enterprise and then sold it to Sandra Brown in 1975.
