Lois was employed for 21 years by the New Hanover Board of Education as a teacher, principal and as the first Director of Programs for Exceptional Children. She was responsible for developing programs for the visually Handicapped, Hearing Impaired, Autistic, Learning Disabled and Emotionally Handicapped in the local schools.
During her retirement years, Lois served a term on the Board of Directors for the Domestic Violence Center and for 13 years was a volunteer in the surgical waiting room at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital. She was a former member and past president of the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a national teachers' sorority. Lois enjoyed the years when she was pianist and Sunday school class teacher in the Adult Department at Temple Baptist Church.
Lois was an active member of a Ladies group of Temple Baptist Church, the NC Retired School Personnel, the Cotillion Dance Club, the Hanover Swingers Square Dance Club, the Stamp Defiance Chapter, NSDAR and Dames of the Court of Honor.
She was an avid traveler and visited every continent except Antarctica. Lois took golf lessons from pro Helen Smith and made a hole in one on par 3 at Inland Greens.
She is predeceased by her first husband Walter Henry Nunalee, second husband Herbert J Fox, brother, Carl S Ward Jr., sister, Dorothy Ward Brittain Davis.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia (Pat) Johnson (Mercer) of Roseboro: Rebecca (Becky) De Silva: Judith (Judy) Caison: Carole Weiss (Chas) of Wilmington: and son Walter Henry Nunalee II (Allyn) of Wilmington: 2 step-sons: David and Chuck Fox: 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren: 2 special nieces and 2 nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Temple Baptist Church at 1801 Market Street, Wilmington, Saturday, June 5th at 3PM with family visitation an hour prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 10AM, Monday, June 7, at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Midway Road, Bolivia.
