MOTHER OF
CLAY LEE KIRK.

ACCIDENT; Fell on steps of garage and gun discharged.

Carl Junction Man's
Death Apparently
Suicide, Fuhr Says

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. --- A 46-year-old Carl Junction man was found dead in a garage at his home here Friday morning, apparently a suicide victim.

Clay Lee Kirk, 207 Verbryck street, was found about 10:30 o'clock Friday morning by a neighbor woman who had started looking for Kirk after his two small children visited her home in an attempt to find him, according to Jasper County Deputy Sheriff Arch Masterson, who investigated.

Masterson said the two children, aged 8 and 5 years, had slept late and were unable to find their father when they woke up.

Kirk's widow, Mrs. Betty Kirk, was at work in Pittsburg, Kan., when the death occurred.

Kirk had placed the barrel of a 20-gauge shotgun against his throat and pulled the trigger, Masterson said.

Jasper county coronor Dr. Wendell Fuhr, who was called to the scene, said the death was apparently a suicide.

Mr. Kirk was born March 11, 1921, in Riverton, Kan. He was married June 10, 1950, in Baxter Springs, Kan. to Betty Maryman. He resided in Baxter Springs prior to moving to Carl Junction 10 years ago.

Mr. Kirk was an employe of the Eagle-Picher Company in the Joplin couples plant. He was on a two-weeks vacation from the plant and was nearing the end of the second week of his vacation.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Baxter Springs, American Legion and the Carl Junction Christian church.

Surviving with the widow are a son, Douglas Kirk, a daughter, Beth Anne Kirk, both of the home; a brother, Lloyd Kirk of Riverton, and his mother, Mrs. Irene Kirk of Riverton.

Services will be announced by Roney funeral service.
