A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia February 2, 1864, as a private with Co. M, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). He was wounded at the battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865, near Petersburg, Virginia. (The company register erroneously reports the date as April 30.) Hospitalized in Philadelphia, he there honorably discharged the service by general order to date June 2, 1865.
He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.
***
Per his death certificate, he was the son of Henry & Mary E. (Burd) Derick, although I do not know if that might be Henry Conrad & Mary E. "Nancy" (Burd) Derick.
