In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer David Swartz in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16, 1864, overstating his age by two years, as a private with Co. A, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865.

He married Emma F. (unknown surname) and fathered Samuel H. (b. @1872), Joseph M. (b. @1874), and Christian C. (b. @1878). Emma and Christian apparently divorced, because he married Ellen (surname unknown) and fathered Bissie (b. 06/82), Clara (b. 02/84), and Reese Albert Edison (b. 05/10/87).
