Johan Fredric Gustafsson was born May 4, 1820 in Säby, Jönköping, Sweden, the son of soldier, Gustaf Stor and his wife Sophia Johansdotter. He was baptized at Säby parish on May 7, 1820. Like his father, he became a soldier and was given the surname of Lejon, which was later Americanized to Lyon when he emigrated. He was married to Charlotta Samuelsdotter Vigren in 1842 and seven children were born to them in Sweden — Gustaf Adolf, Hedda Sophia, Anna Charlotta, Carl Johan, Gustaf Adolf, August and Jenny. The family emigrated to America in 1860. His wife died in 1872 and he remarried in 1873 to Anna Charlotta (Ericsdotter) Gustafson. Together they had two sons, Frederick George and Frans Edwin.
