Balser, Seddie Alice, 98, of Digby passed away July 4 , 2012 in the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home . Born October 15, 1913 in Yarmouth Co. she was a daughter of the late Horton Jones and Bertha (Wetmore) Crosby of Yarmouth. Seddie began her 27 year teaching career at 16 in a one room school house in Richmond. A short time later she accepted a position in Digby and she remained there where she married Hartley Balser, raised a family and continued to teach. She was an avid reader and traveller. Interests she was able to pass on to her children. Seddie truly believed in lifelong learning and continued to take courses and study throughout her life. She believed everyone could learn and should learn. She devoted her life to this premise. Seddie was deeply rooted in her Christian faith. She was very involved with the Hillgrove Baptist Church, the Baptist Womens' Missionary Movement, the Atlantic Baptist Convention as well as a number of other organizations. She also enjoyed volunteering her time with a number of community organizations. She took great pride in her flower gardens and feeding the birds. Seddie was an avid quilter, seamstress and crafter. She could boast that her quilts could be found in homes all around the world.. She also enjoyed cooking and preserving pickles and jams. On a summer day, after haying, kids found her cookies and Kool Aide that were a treat to be remembered. Surviving are sons Peter (Susan), Digby; Roger (Tessa), Victoria, BC; Gordon (Wendy), Digby; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Hartley Balser, her children, infant son, Lloyd, sons, John, Robert, daughter, Kay. Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9pm Wednesday, July 11, from Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch St. Digby. (245-2525) Funeral service will be 11 am Thursday from the Hillgrove Baptist Church.
