Around 1871, daughter Maria went to Chicago to work. She died of a fever on 5 Nov 1871. Grandson Albert Kaus believed her death was caused from sleeping on wet grass the night of the Great Chicago fire and that her sister Anna also died as a result of the fire. A record of Maria's death in Chicago was the only one that could be found. On 6 Aug 1876, William died in Plymouth. It is not known what happened to Frank.
On 16 Dec 1879, John purchased 157.05 acres of land in Platte County, Nebraska for $688.33. It was in Section 7, Township 20, Range 2 owned by the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Company. (Deed Book K, pp 616 & 617). The railroad promised to bring the railroad to the area but it never did. John spent the rest of his life on that farm near St. Bernard.
His son (Henry) is on a list of the first students of the St. Bernard School, which was established in 1878. Their son Henry Kaus and grandson Leo Kaus and their families lived on the Kaus farm until some time around 1955.
From St. Bernard church records - Members Congregation St. Bernard 1881:
Kaus, Joannes born 3 Sep 1823.
Kaus, Margaretha nat. Westenberger, born 6 Jan 1824.
Kaus, Michael born 8 Jun 1862, communion 15 May 1876.
