Rebecca Strain known as "Aunt Becky" was the oldest known daughter of David Strain, Jr. and Elizabeth Allen Strain. She was born in Pennsylvania, like her parents, in about 1794. They traveled the long bumpy Indian route from then Dauphin County, Pennsylvania to Augusta Co. where they settled. Her parents purchased land there on 15 Sep 1795. I suspect she was named for Elizabeth's mother Rebecca Smith. Elizabeth never married. After her parents passed and other siblings married or left, she remained on her parent's homestead with her bachelor brother John, until the end.

I have not found widow Elizabeth Strain, with unmarried children REBECCA and John, on the 1850 Virginia census or 1850 slave schedule. There were no Strains in Augusta Co., only in Rockbridge Co. did I find her son's family. Their home appears to have been missed or they were away. In 1860 living next to REBECCA and bro John, was Geo McClure 38 (B abt 1822) and Wm Hart, 65 (B abt 1795). So I went back seeking his neighbors in 1850 and they were both in Dist. 2 1/2 now (McClure was listed as McCann on Ancestry), but not any Strains or similar. I even checked for land owner and neighbor Wm Cochran who sold land in 1860 and found him near the other two above, but no Elizabeth, Rebecca or John.

On 25 Apr 1857, Elizabeth's mother died and was buried at the Bethel Churchyard.

On the 1860 Dist. 1, Staunton P.O., Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found farmer John Strain, 55 (abt 1805) with $4800 in real estate and Rebecca Strain, 65 (abt 1795), both (sic) Pennsylvania, born. John was born in Virginia and Rebecca in Pennsylvania.

Note: The Augusta County Clerks Office sent me a document in 1993 showing the data in their Register of Deaths. They transcribed it for me. Line 5301, Rebecca Strain, white, female, died 9 May 1869 (not 6th, typo?) in Augusta County, Virginia, cause of death was "old age." Aged 75, parents: David & Elizabeth Strain, born in Pennsylvania, unmarried, informant was her brother John Strain (who she resided with).

Then I found the "same" transcription in Margaret C. Reese's Abstracts of Augusta Co., Virginia Death Registers, 1853 - 1896, 1983, page 116 lists she died instead on the 7th at age 75. It is interesting that the cemetery record (OR gravestone) says she died 1 day earlier on the 6th.

Lastly in the 18 May 1869 issue of the Staunton Spectator, I found under Deaths: "On the 7th of May, near Greenville, Miss REBECCA STRAIN." I can only guess that her marker was installed at a later date, when the details were fuzzy or the paper made a mistake. No idea which is correct. Take your pick, 6th, 7th or 9th. :)

Her gravestone says:

REBECCA STRAIN
