Mary Jane Strain was the daughter and last known child of David Strain, Jr. and Elizabeth Allen Strain. She married James H. Cochran, on 30 Dec 1834 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Wm Cochran* gave consent, relationship unknown. It appears she died after the 1850 census and before James remarriage in July 1859.

They had 3 known Cochran children born in Virginia ( per 1850 census:

John Strain, 22 Jan 1836 (married 3 times), below
Louisa, 11 Nov 1839 (Mrs. R F Russell),
Mary Martha, 16 May 1846,

On the 1850 Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found machinist James Cochran, 40; MARY J., 31; John, 14; Louisia, 10 and Mary M., 5, plus 2 blacksmith boarders. All Virginia born. Mary J. is last found on the 1850 Augusta Co., Virginia census.

Mary Jane's burial location and exact death date is unknown. It is not known IF she left Virginia for Tennessee.

FAMILY Trail:
In July 1859, her husband appears to have remarried a younger woman, Mary S. or Susan Robertson (with changing ages and names, confusing matters).

On the 20 Jun 1860 Rhea Twp., Greene Co., Tennessee Census, I found mechanic James H. Cochran, 50, Virginia born; domestic Mary S Cochran, 30, Tennessee; with Mary M. Cochran, 14, Tennessee. Mary S. is younger and born in Tennessee, she appears to be a step mother.

I found his son and daughter in law, on the 1860 Campbells, Washington Co., Tennessee census. Blacksmith J S Cochran, 26, Virginia; domestic May A Cochran, 24, Tennessee and (grandson) Wm H Cochran, 3/12, Tennessee. They lived next to (his married daughter and his son in law) shoemaker R F Russell, 28, born in North Carolina; domestic, Louisa Russell, 20, Virginia; kids born in Tennessee: Wm H Russell, 2 and unnamed (female?) Russell, 8/12.

In 1860, I SUSPECT James H. Cochran was a possible relation of a William Cochran, who lived next to the Strain farm, per 20 Nov 1860 Staunton Spectator issue advertising a public land sale in Augusta Co., between Greenville and Middlebrook, adjoining Strain and Cochran's land. See clipping on the right from the 2 Dec 1860 Staunton Spectator. Mary's brother John now owned their father's estate in 1860.

On the 25 June 1870 Jonesboro, Washington Co., Tennessee Census, I found machinist James H. Cochran, 60, Virginia born; keeping house Mary S. Cochran, 43, Tennessee, residing with (Louisa's son) William Russell, 11, Tennessee, attending school.

* This William Cochran born about 1797 in Virginia (Findagrave # 53667208), died in 1869. He lived adjacent to the to the Strain farm, southeast of Middlebrook and west of Greenville. He married Eliza McCormick on 3 Nov 1824. Mary's brother, John Strain witnessed William Cochran's will 1869. Suspect Mary's husband James was from the Rockbridge Co., Virginia Cochran clan, not Augusta Co. (per genealogist Mrs. Catherine Bushman's paid request). He was buried at Bethel, like Mary's parents were.

In 1880, a Wm H. Cochran, 41, wife, mother and sister lived next door to Mary Jane's brother John Strain, 77 in the Riverheads District of Augusta Co., Virginia. I SUSPECT he is also related to James H. Cochran.

Could this be daughter (Mary) "Jane Cochran" who was buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery? She had a daughter Mary Martha and a Miss Martha Cochran is also buried at Bethel. Both have no dates but were recorded in an issue of the 26 Mar 1878 Staunton Spectator. It includes an article called Bethel Church-Yard. It includes over 500 people's names only.
