Clyde joined the US Army in February 1959 at Ft. Knox in Kentucky. After joining the military, Clyde was stationed at Ft. Riley in Kansas for 22 weeks of basic training, participating in an experimental group that attended boot camp longer than the typical 9 weeks of basic training. The idea was longer basic training would prepare the group for combat better in that length of time than the 9 weeks basic training. He was in the 1st Infantry Division during his basic training.
At the end of basic training Clyde was PFC. E-3 Durnil. From Ft. Riley, Clyde was then stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington. There he was assigned TDY to post troops quartermaster. His duties had him driving jeeps, truck, half tank retrievers, semi and buses which PFC. Durnil also trained other comrades to drive.
PFC. Durnil served 2 years active duty, 2 years active reserves and 2 years standby reserves. After receiving his Honorable Discharge from the military in March 1965, Clyde went home and became an ordained minister.
He spent time with his family in Trinidad, West Indies as a missionary. He also pastored a church in Illinois and one in Georgia. The last 32 years he spent in Milford, Ohio at First Baptist Church as a Bearing Precious Seed Missionary.
He raised money to print Bibles that are given to people all over the world. He made mission trips to over 22 countries. His favorite past time was reading his Bible and sharing his faith with others.
