Hayden Winfield French died in Merced County. He married Felicia Hermans Gould on 25 Nov 1859. They had one (sic) son, Charles Mortimer French.

Hayden served in the Civil War, and afterword relocated to Montana in 1865. In 1868, he made a home in Merced where his family joined him. He held a sheep business and was appointed sheriff for 14 years under Sheriff A. J. Meany. He then became constable, a position he held until his death.

Per his obituary:
He married Miss Felicia H. Gould in 1859 and they had five children: three girls and two boys. At the time of his death, his wife and four children survived him. His surviving daughters were Mrs. John R. Jones of Fresno and Miss Abbie French of Merced, and his sons were Charles M. French and Winnie French, both of Merced.

He was a Civil War veteran and served as Deputy Sheriff for 13 years under Sheriff A. J. Meany, starting in 1875. When Mr. Meany retired, he served as constable or deputy constable for Merced Township.
