WM. H. COONS BURIED TODAY

Funeral Services for Known Galenan Held
in the Late Residence at 2:30 This Afternoon.

HAD ENVIABLE RECORD AS MAIL CARRIER

Was Appointed as Carrier When First Rural Mail Route
Was Established in Galena on October 1, 1901.

Funeral services for William H. Coons, widely known Galenan, who died last Sunday night, were held in the late residence at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. The Rev. R. S. Robertson, pastor of the Christian church, conducted the services.

Coons had lived in Galena for a number of years and when the first rural mail route was established on October 1, 1901, he was appointed as a carrier for Uncle Sam, which position he held until a short time ago. Mr. Coons, despite the fact that he was 58 years of age when appointed as carrier, had missed only one day during the many years that he was an emissary for the government.

The weather was never too hot nor too cold to prevent him from delivering the mail on his route. He covered his territory when the roads were filled with great snowdrifts and would have been considered by many as impassable. Again, in the early months of the year when the spring rains had swelled the streams and made the roads dangerous to travel over, Mr. Coons never failed to deliver the expected letter to his customers along his route, and it is safe to say that the United States Postal Department has not had many employees who were more faithful in discharging their duties than William H. Coons.

Mr. Coons
was also a Civil War veteran and a member of the Soldiers and Sailors Historical and Benevolent Society of Washington, D. C.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Fletcher and Charles Coons, of Baxter Springs; one daughter, Mrs. Harvey Thompson, of Galena; one sister, Mrs. Sarah E. Nolan, of Creston (sic), Iowa, and two brothers, John and Charles Coons, of Illinois.
