Jacob Tome, 1810-1898, was Cecil County's first millionaire, a self-made man. He was a Gubernatorial Candidate for Governor of Maryland, a Senator during the Civil War and helped outfit Snow's Battery B 1st MD Light Artillery for the conflict. He was the founder of Jacob Tome Institute, a free school in Port Deposit, that put the public school out of business - to this day there isn't a public school in the town. His school is now known as The Tome School and operates in North East, Md.
