Born April 5, 1894, in Alta to Dr. Walter H. and Elma Shaw Allen, he married Lura Harlan on June 22, 1916, in Peoria. She died June 10, 1956, in Alta. He later married Helen Rowcliff [Hutson] on Feb. 1, 1964, in Peoria. She died Jan. 25, 1990, in Peoria. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, one son, one daughter, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Elizabeth) Lemons of Mahomet; two sons, Lee R. of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Dr. Benton C. Jr. of Galesburg; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was a veterinarian practicing in Peoria County for more than 40 years. He farmed and raised registered Hereford cattle.
He was a member of the Illinois and American Hereford Associations and was named the Illinois Hereford "Man of the Year" in 1967. He graduated from Chicago Veterinary College in 1915. A charter member and organizer of Exposition Gardens, he served on its board of directors for many years.
He was a 70-year member and past master of Alta Masonic Lodge, AF&AM, and a member of the Dunlap Kiwanis Club.
He also was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap, where services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Revs. Ron Dickinson and David Goodell will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home, with masonic rites at 7. Burial will be in Mount Hawley Cemetery in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to his church, Salvation Army, South Side Mission or any charity.
