Jerry Wayne Wheeler, 73, of Indianapolis, passed away in the early morning of Friday, January 8, 2021 at his home with his wife of 7 years by his side.

Jerry was born on Tuesday, September 30, 1947 in Madison, Tennessee, one of five children born to the late Jewell Eugene Wheeler and Bessie Mae Downs.

Jerry moved to Indiana as a child with his family and attended Ben Davis High School. He retired from Allison Transmission Division of General Motors Corporation working in production. A proud veteran, he proudly and honorably served his country as Specialist 5th Class in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged by the United States Army on November 7, 1972 by Brigadier General Louis J. Prost. Jerry was a handyman and could fix or repair most anything.

He was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW), the American Legion as well as the VFW. He enjoyed riding horses (especially his own horse, Little Bit), working in his yard, driving his Ford Pickup truck (he only owned white Ford's), country music, especially Vern Gosdin, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams, Sr. He also enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts and the Purdue Boilermakers. Watching old westerns starring his hero, John Wayne, was also something Jerry enjoyed a great deal. He was a devout Christian, baptized at Park Avenue Church of Christ in Indianapolis, Indiana on Christmas Eve of 2006.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 7 years and 357 days, Patricia Ann (Nunn) Wheeler; his daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Jay Hatfull of Noblesville; his step-daughters, Angela, and her husband, Steve Matney of Shelbyville, and Jody, and her husband, Daniel Wilhoite of Pittsboro; his two (2) grandchildren, Brady Hatfull (his "best buddy") and Aisley Hatfull of Noblesville; his step-grandchildren, Michael Hatfull of Speedway, Bella Matney of Shelbyville, Brandy Huffman of Shelbyville; Alex Wilhoite of Pittsboro and Emily Wilhoite and her boyfriend, Clay, of Indiana; Patricia's children, Gary Chesney of Troy, North Carolina, John Chesney and his wife, Angie, of North Carolina; Patricia's grandchildren, all of North Carolina; his brothers, Eddie Wheeler of Mooresville, and Roger, and his wife, Aleena Wheeler of Cleveland, TN; his half-brother, Buddy Young of Tennessee; his sister, Jewell Dean Trump of Indianapolis; as well as his nieces & nephews, Jeff Akers of Indianapolis (whom he was like a father too), David Akers, and his wife, Lori of Indianapolis, Jimmy McGee, and his wife, Terri of Tennessee, Chrissie Grogan, Donna Cozad, Tammy Summers of Mooresville, Missy Wheeler, Ashlee Chance of Tennessee, and many other family members & friends.

He was preceded in passing by his father, Jewell Eugene Wheeler in 1992; his mother, Bessie Mae (Downs) Wheeler in 1993; his half-sister, Carroll Sue (Young) McGee in 2010; his sister, Sandra Kaye "Sandy" (Wheeler) Holland in 2008; his step-mother, Evelyn Sue (Crick) Wheeler in 1994; his step-sister, Linda (Miles) Golden Thomas in 1995; his sister-in-law, Linda Wheeler in 2016; as well as his brothers-in-law, Larry LaVern Trump in 1999, Jimmy Ples McGee in 2009, & Dillard Wayne Holland in 2010.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home - 1977 South State Road 235, Greenwood with Pastor Danny Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be his grandson and "Best Buddy", Brady Hatfull; his brothers, Eddie and Roger Wheeler; his son-in-law, Jay Hatfull; and his nephews, Jeff and David Akers. Military honors will be offered by a contingent from the United States Army. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the time of services.
