Civil War veteran, Company A, 18th U.S. Infantry. Graduated from Western Reserve College in Hudson in 1859. Killed at the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee at age 22 years. Rank at time of death was 2nd Lieutenant, but he was breveted to 1st Lieutenant. Husband of Clara Maria Hitchcock. Son of Henry Lawrence and Clarissa Mary Sophia Ford Hitchcock (Henry was elected president of Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio on 31 May 1855). He was born August 30, 1840 according to "The Genealogy of the Hitchcock Family Who Are Descended from Matthias Hitchcock of East Haven, Conn. and Luke Hitchcock of Wethersfield, Conn.," published in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1894. The "September 30" birthdate is taken from a memorial for John, listed in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio (memorial #70035769).
**Note** It is also quite possible that, although he is listed on a marker in Markillie Cemetery (as well as being listed with a memorial at Green Lawn), that he was actually buried at Stones River (Murfreesboro, TN) National Cemetery, where a veteran's marker is in place for him in Section C, Grave 994. All of this is currently being investigated, and corrections will be made, if warranted.

Although John is listed on the marker with his wife in Markillie Cemetery in Hudson, Ohio, I have moved his memorial to Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio per information on his death and funeral. He still could be buried at Markillie, but Green Lawn has a record of him there. As stated above, he also has a stone at Stones River National Cemetery. He is listed as interred in Grave C-994 at Stones River. The current photograph of the stone here is from Markillie.
