Richard Allen Lightner Sr.
May 12, 1947 - December 08, 2020

Richard Allen Lightner Sr., 73, of Bessemer City, passed away on December 8, 2020, at his home.

He was born May 12, 1947, in Rushville, Indiana, son of the late Bob and Margorie Dye and Chester Lightner.

He was a US Army veteran who served two tours in the Vietnam War and had received a purple heart and other commendations. Richard was a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Bessemer City, where he loved to sing and fellowship with other church members. He retired from Yellow Freight with over 23 years of service as a truck driver and had numerous trucking jobs before that. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and one of his greatest joys was to see them laugh and smile and to be able to spend time with them. He enjoyed going to the beach and surf fishing with his family and catching lots of fish. Eating was a favorite thing to do, along with just plain ole relaxing. He had a funny sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Now we know he is in a better place than we are, and he would want you to get right with God, so you can meet him in heaven come your time.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Sandra Sellers Lightner; son, Kenny Sellers and wife Shannon of Bessemer City, grandson, Austin Sellers and fiancée Aaliyah, granddaughter, Makenzie Sellers, grandson, Hunter Sellers; great-granddaughter, Kehlani Sellers; son, Bobby Dye and wife Cindi of Palm Bay Florida, son, Dickie Dye of Indiana; grandchildren, Alex Dye, Samantha Harrison, Cedric Jarmin, Kody Jarmin, Kylie Hall, Kelli Ensley; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda Woods, Jackie Duke, both of Rushville, Indiana.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Richard Allen Lightner Jr.; daughter, Lisa Marie; brother, Billy Lightner; sisters, Brenda Jones, Sue Cheek.

Richard will lie in state 9-12 on Monday, December 14, 2020, at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Rd. Gastonia. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 14, 2020, at Westview Gardens, 1123 Edgewood Rd. Bessemer City, officiated by Pastor Robin Taylor and military honors provided by the Army National Guard. Memorials may be sent to Harvest Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1286 Bessemer City, NC 28016.
