His birth name was Hendrick Johannesson Ra. He immigrated to the United States in 1857 and initially settled in Crawford County, Wisconsin. Henry was a Civil War veteran and was injured at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. Henry moved the family to Richland County, North Dakota in 1880.
