Virgil Fred Carniglia
Services are Saturday for Virgil Fred Carniglia, a Santa Cruz native who died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 58.
Mr. Carniglia's health had been failing for the past two years.
He was the son of Marco Carniglia Sr. and Mary Bregante Carniglia, and was born into one of the pioneer fishing families of Santa Cruz. He attended Cross School and fished with his father and four brothers on the fishing boat Five Brothers, which his father built for the family when three of the sons returned from World War II.
Mr. Carniglia was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy with his twin brother, Victor Carniglia Jr.
Mr. Carniglia also worked at the Camp Evers Grocery Store for 25 years as manager of the grocery department. He was also a member of Holy Cross Church.
He is survived by his wife, Christene Carniglia, his son, Marco Carniglia and daughter, Vivian Carnigtia, all of Santa Cruz; two brothers, John Carniglia of Santa Cruz, and his twin brother Victor Carniglia of Aptos; and two sisters, Lorraine Carniglia and Augustine Bregante both of Santa Cruz
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marco Carniglia Jr., and August "Jocko"* Carniglia.
A funeral cortege will leave at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from, Norma's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Drive, Soquel and proceed to Holy Cross Church, 126 High St., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Norman's Family Chapel. Friends may after 9 a.m. Friday at the chapel.
Interment in the Santa Cruz Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Contributions to the Leukemia Society of America, Room 714, 323 Geary St., San Francisco, Calif. 94102 are preferred.
