He was killed and another soldier wounded in a mortar attack approximately 47 km west of Kandahar City in the Panjwayi District. Cpl Hornburg, a mechanic, had dismounted to repair a track that had fallen off one of the Leopard tanks. Three other soldiers were slightly wounded in the following firefight.
This is the regiment's first combat casualty since 1944 in Holland. Seventy-one soldiers and one diplomat have now died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Cpl Hornburg was remembered in Calgary as a good friend and an inspiration in his determination to do his duty. He had attended Mount Royal College and worked as a landscaper before serving full-time in the reserves. He is survived by his father Michael Hornburg, mother Linda Loree, sister Rachel Herbert (Tyler) and many relatives in Calgary and Nanton. The family issued a statement that Nathan was a man of character and purpose, with a warrior's heart, never afraid to lead from the front.
Funeral Service with military honours held in Calgary on October 4, 2007.
The memorial card handed out at the funeral included a personal verse written for Nathan by his teacher when he was in the fourth grade:
Praise to the mighty men
Born in the days of old
Mighty were their deeds
Strong they were and bold
Climbed the rocky crag
Sailed the stormy seas
Leaped the farthest leap
Mighty men were these.
