Mary Emily Hacking was a daughter of Jane Clark Hacking and John Sampson Hacking.

Although she had ten older brothers and sisters, she was a welcome little girl, but she wsn't permitted to stay very long. When just a little more than a week old she began having convulsions, and had dozens of them, until mother said it was a relief to have death come and release her from her suffering when she was two weeks old. Mother wasn't well enough to go to the cemetery, but older sister, "Aunt Hattie" said the fruit trees were in blossom and they gathered the floweres and covered her little grave completely with blossoms.

Her thirteen siblings are: Harriet Ambrosine Hacking, James Hacking, Phebe Ann Hacking Merkley, Jane Elizabeth Hacking Southam, Eleanor Hacking Anderson, John Sampson Hacking Jr., Henry Franklin Hacking, Charles Lorenzo Hacking, Joseph Pearson Hacking, George Alfred Hacking, Mary Emily Hacking, Martha Caroline Hacking, Orson Ezra Hacking and Thomas William Hacking.
