EDWARDSVILLE - Charles A. Blume, 98, died at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday [April 6, 1983] at Oliver Anderson Hospital, Maryville [Madison County, Illinois].

Born in Worden, [Madison County, Illinois] a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Blume, he married the former Lenora [Ernestine] Cowden on Feb. 2, 1910, in Danville. [Vermilion County, Illinois]. She died Oct. 10, 1974.

Surviving are a son, J. [Joyce or Jack] Cowden Blume of Edwardsville [Madison County, Illinois]; a brother, Otto of Worden [Madison County, Illinois]; and a sister, Viola Hemme of Edwardsville [Madison County, Illinois].

There will be no visitation.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday [April 8, 1983] at the Sunset Hill Cemetery Mausoleum with the Rev. Carl Bennett officiating.

Pletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

From the Friday, October 6, 1933 Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, "Edwardsville Intelligencer", newspaper, page 3, column 5, there was a mention of Charles A. Blume receiving the 33rd degree honor in Freemasonry.

FORMER RESIDENT HONORED WITH HIGH MASONIC DEGREE

Charles A. Blume, for twenty years on the Post Office staff of this city, now residing at Newtonville, Mass., was last week elected to the highest honors in Freemasonry, being elected to the Thirty-third Degree at the meeting of the Supreme Council held in Boston [Mass.] last week.

This degree can be petitioned for, but is awarded only for distinguished Masonic or civic service and comes entirely unanticipated by its recipient. He will receive the degree in September of next year [1934] at the meeting at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Governor Henry Horner of Illinois was honored at some time and will receive the degree with Blume.

Mr. Blume has been in charge of the Supreme Council accounting department at general headquarters in Boston [Mass.], where C. H. Spillman, formerly of this city has offices, as Grand Secretary General. Mr. Blume's Masonic memberships are in Edwardsville [Madison County, Illinois] and East St. Louis [St. Clair County, Illinois].
