Velores Beatrice Hanson, 95, of Rice Lake, Wis., died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Dallas Township, to Emil and Hannah (Nelson) Larson. She graduated from Chetek High School, then earned her teaching degree from UW-Superior.
She was married in Prairie Farm on May 25, 1940, to Harold Hanson. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn., for five years before moving to Reeve, where Velores taught at the rural school. She taught school in Wisconsin and California until they retired to Spooner in 1985. Harold passed away on Jan. 22, 1990, after which she moved back to Rice Lake.
Velores made over 100 quilts for the Lutheran missions to Africa, and for each of her children and grandchildren. She was a gifted poet and writer, as evidenced by notes on all of her pictures. Velores was an exceptional educator of both children and adults, cultivating talented teachers for rural schools around Rice Lake. She was also very generous with both her time and resources. She will be missed and remembered.
She is survived by two children, Mary Jo Hanson Clark, of Las Vegas, Nev., and David Hanson, of Gilroy, Calif.; grandchildren, Darcy (Penny) Goodwin and their children, Dashel and Dane, of Las Vegas, Kerry (K.C.) Clark, of Seaside, Ore., and Kjerstin J. Clark Wallen and Mike and their children, Gabriella and River, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; one brother, Lester (Karen) Larson, of Fridley, Minn.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Beranek; and three siblings, Herbert Larson, Frances Aplikowski and LaVern Larson.
A celebration of Velores’ life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at New Scandinavia Lutheran Church, Hillsdale, with the Rev. Heather Kistner officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in Akers Cemetery, Prairie Farm. There will be a gathering one hour prior to the service at the church, 652 17-1/2 St., Dallas.
