Colonel Melvin Grigsby, Sioux Falls; Civil War soldier at Andersonvile Prison; author of "The Smoked Yank". He lived to the age of 72 years and was buried on 19 Feb 1917 in Block 15, Lot 6 Mt Pleasant.

Melvin Grigsby (1845-1917) served in Co. C, 2nd Wisc. Cav., in the Civil War and was taken prisoner in Miss. in 1864. He was held in Cahaba, Ala., Andersonville, Ga., & Florence, S.C., where he escaped in Jan. 1865. After the war, he graduated from normal school and became an attorney. He moved to Sioux Falls, D.T. (later S.D.), and wrote a book, The Smoked Yank (Sioux Falls, 1888), and with a revised edition in 1911. (The above portrait is from the title page of the Rev. Edn., and he was apparently serving in the First Infantry Regiment, South Dakota Volunteer Militia.) In 1897-99, he was Atty. Gen. of South Dakota, and during that time, in the Spanish-American War (1898), he was Col. of the 3rd U.S. Vol. Cav., known as "Grigsby's Cowboys." After his death in 1917, his government marker listed only his Civil War unit and not his rank and unit in the Span. Amer. War.
